Also, a change in the euro exchange rate that helps one country may hurt another country. Furthermore, the strong Euro makes it harder for the Euro zone exporters to sell their goods. Why is it in difficulty now? In 2010, the financial crisis in Greece rocked the value of the euro. This was brought on by a decade of free spending by the Greek government, which ran up high level of debt to finance extensive spending in the public sector. They misled the international community about the level of its indebtedness, shattering any faith that international investors had in Greek economy. The main concern at that point was that the Greek government would not be able to refinance their 20 billion euro debt. There was further concern that they did not have the political willpower to make the large cuts in public spending necessary to bring down the deficit to restore investor confidence.
